It didn't take me long to realize. I was standing outside of a circulating pool of energy, swing music providing a pulse for the pinwheels of hair and dresses that swirled in front of me. It was when the figures paused on their steps that I noticed just how diverse the dancers were. There was a couple in their eighties - although while dancing I could imagine the wife as a bride, kicking up her heels and lifting her skirts a little higher than her mom would approve. There was a younger couple also - and though they weren't anything more than friends, they danced with an enthusiasm that made a lot of observing wives jealous.
Then there were the rest. And looking around at the hodge-podge of couples twisting and twirling and kicking across the floor, I realized on this Saturday night just how little we're defined by our weekdays. In any other situation I probably could have made a good guess at how they spent their days from 9-5, but with a smile, a little bit of music, and someone to hold on to, we all become someone bigger. The balding, slightly pudgy guy in plaid is proof of this - at least to his date, who isn't coming off the dance floor until the band packs it in. Their life was rich - and that's the one thing that I knew about everyone who was dancing.
I guess I hadn't seen that many people that happy congregated together in a long time. I think that this must be what church is supposed to be like.
