Yep - it’s a plane
Jul 8th, 2007 by Jesse Moore

It’s not everyday that you get to attend an unveiling of one of the most innovative and heralded airplanes in the world, but that’s exactly what Kami and I did today. Having to find a replacement babysitter on the fly made us a little late, but we stood in line with a couple of thousand other people that weren’t expecting several thousand others to be arriving so close to the unveiling.
Tom Brokaw emceed the event - and while the conversations between him and Boeing execs seemed forced at times, Mr. Brokaw was a good choice - his mere presence setting a tone that was both dignified and…well, newsworthy. Estimates put the attendance at the live event at 15,000 - internet and television broadcasting of the unveiling is estimated to have reached over 100 million others.
A friend of mine asked me how it went, and I said “Yep, it’s a plane.” It’s much more than that I know, but until I get to sit in it or see it at the airport, my personal attachment to the plane is minimal. Kami works on the 787 program though (which is why we were allowed to attend the event at all), and for those that have worked so hard on making this plane a reality, I’m sure seeing their hard work realized was rewarding. Conceptually the plane IS pretty amazing, flying further distances with more people and less fuel, all the while bringing the magic and mystique back to flying with bigger seats, bigger windows, high-tech air filtration and lighting systems.
