We all got home yesterday a little before 2pm – right before Selah’s nap time. I let Kami get settled in with David a little and then I went across the street to pick up Selah from our favorite neighbors I told Kami to have the video camera ready, so as soon as I got Selah free of her snow gear I could videotape the first meeting between brother and sister. I’m so glad that we did this, because it tells us so much about Selah’s character. She was super excited to hold her new brother, and she seems to know that this baby will be sticking around. I’ve posted a link below so you can all see their first meeting:

Quality of YouTube video is a little grainy, but click above to watch.

Kami came home from work Wednesday afternoon and decided to check the mail. She opened the mailbox, and contemplated waving at a nearby neighbor when her water broke, and she decided against it. We were a little surprised – thinking that we had a solid three weeks before we had to organize a mad scramble to the hospital. Needless to say, this made our scramble all the more mad

We got to the hospital at 5pm, and our friend Megan Antonius (who was our attending nurse when Selah was born thanks to her willingness to change shifts) arrived around 8pm. Megan is a Labor & Delivery Nurse, and an awesome asset to have in a delivery room (takes some of the pressure off of me mostly). Kami started pushing around 11:50pm, and at around 12:20am on Wednesday, 12/17/2008, our second child was born.

A baby boy! We were very surprised because Kami’s pregnancy didn’t seem to vary that much from when she carried Selah. His name is David Carrico Moore: David for literal reasons (read 1st Samuel 17:58), and Carrico after one of my favorite people on earth, my grandfather Frank Carrico. We had the name planned before Kami and I were married (just as Selah’s was), and I’m glad that we get to honor him with a grandson.

These pictures aren’t the best, so I’ll post more tomorrow. Right now it’s almost 2am, and everyone is a little tired. The baby is healthy (7 lbs, 12 oz; 19.5 inches tall), and Kami is also feeling healthy and strong.

Welcome David! You are loved!

Selah has the cutest way of correcting me. I was reading her a book about marine life the other day, where one of her favorite activities is to point out the different pictures and say “Name?” I tell her the name and she says “Yep” and then moves on to the next animal. Most recently she pointed to a clown fish and asked me the name. I said “Clown fish” and she said, “No, Nemo actually.” I don’t think that just turned two year-olds are supposed to know the correct use of “actually,” but Selah has it down. In the same session I pointed out a shark and she said “Airplane actually daddy.” She thinks that sharks are airplanes since they both have tail fins. “Actually” is now Selah’s favorite word, and while I’m sure our daughter correcting us will get old, for now it’s endearing.

I’m at a different coffee house this morning – I thought the people watching prospects might be better here. They really aren’t. One gal looks like a Dr. Seuss character, too skinny and topped with a stocking cap that’s colored like a hypnotizing wheel. I’ve never been able to pull off the stocking cap look. There are a lot of looks that don’t work well on me, and wearing an adornment that hugs my large geodesic dome is one of them.

Ugh! A mom is digging for gold out of her three year-old’s nose right in front of me. I think she’s looking for an artery. I won’t be able to sit on that couch ever again. More moms and kids coming in to the coffee shop now. We’ve tried to hold business meetings at this coffee shop, but every once in awhile it’s more like a Chucky Cheese than a coffee shop. I was hoping Saturday morning would be different.

Nose picking mom is actually really nice. She has a quiet demeanor and a relative ease that I’m not used to seeing from a mother of two young kids. There’s another mother here doing her best to look like Britney Spears in the Los Angeles sun, only we’re not in Los Angeles and it’s cloudy, so those designer sunglasses seem a little forced. Wear a t-shirt that says “High Maintenance” while you’re at it. I don’t mean to be harsh, I’ve just never been one to appreciate the high maintenance woman. I prefer beauty without the artistry in that regard.

Lipstick on a pig. I’m embarrassed for my country that it became an issue. Know what’s funny? A teenager wearing a hat that says “World’s Greatest Dad.” I think that we’re having a girl. A girl that could remain nameless, considering that we went all-in on “Selah.” I just asked a friend of mine if he still went geocaching, and he said that not as much since the local and state parks had banned the practice. They were afraid that terrorists might plant bombs for adventurous Americans to dig up. Yes – because geocaching represents all that is wrong with Western civilization. Now that I’m aware I’m working on legislation that will keep people from planting tulips. Can’t be too safe. Guy across from me is wearing black shoes with blue slacks – pet peeve. Buy some brown. Selah’s favorite song is “Happy Birthday.” She tells us who to sing it to. So far I’ve sung it to: Mommy, Daddy, Grandma, Papa, G-Daddy, Reesie, Sara, Dustin, Erin, Micah, Selah, french fries, the letter “P”, the letter “R”, Lighting McQueen, Mader, Doc, Nemo, pillow, house, shoes, hat, ear and nose. The other song I sing her is the theme song for “Weeds,” a song called Little Boxes: “Little boxes, on the hillside, little boxes made of ticky-tacky, little boxes on the hillside, little boxes all the same. There’s a green one and a pink one and a blue one and a yell-ow one and they’re all made out of ticky-tack and they all look just the same.” But she prefers “Happy Birthday” most of all.

Dearest daughter,

Your mom has been out of town for five days in a row. You’re only eighteen months old, and while you don’t vocalize it, I know that her absence is noticed by you. I don’t want to bring her up in case it sends you into a frantic search down the hall and into every room. I know how disappointed you get when Elmo doesn’t come up on the tv, so I can only imagine how disappointed you would be if you misinterpreted my mention of your mother as an invocation of her arrival.

I just wanted to let you know what a pleasure you’ve been the last five days. You’ve been absolutely wonderful. I’m admittedly exhausted, but it’s no fault of yours. I’m very proud of your independence and your ability to play without a commitment from others. You surprise me with your knowledge and your unselfish nature, and bless me with unsolicited hugs and fits of laughter.

Tomorrow morning your mom will wake you, and I look forward to your enthusiastic reaction – no doubt marked with some jumping, one-legged marching and a dazzling display of other moves you perfected in your mom’s absence. I’ll try not to seem affected if you give her the lion’s share of affection over the next few days, but know that I’ve loved our time together, and that usually dad’s aren’t as stalwart as they appear.

Love, Dad

Kami and Selah left on Thursday to visit my parents in Miles City. My dad hasn’t had many opportunities to get to know his grand-daughter, so Kami volunteered to take Selah over for the weekend. I had to stay and work, but before they left, Kami and Selah recorded a message on our camcorder. One of the things that I accompished in their absence included compiling a short video of Selah learning to say the names of some of her family members – and the message they left me before they left was too cute not to share. I posted the video on the Selah page, so click on the tab above to view.

I’m going to try not to post on the blog everytime we update the Selah page, so you’ll have to check it without our prompting from time to time. On the rare occassion I put a video together, I’m going to make sure people know about it!

This might be more for me than it is for you – only because I would normally have to wait until the release of a Blog Sessions cd to get any feedback on the music I’m passionate about.

The other tab is for our new Selah page, and I don’t think that I have to explain this one Kami wanted a place where she could post photos or videos of Selah more frequently, and again, everyone will be allow to comment on our lovely little girl.

Thanks again to Mike – as putting this together was way outside my comfort zone.

Here are a few photos from the last three months. She’s 17 months old now, and can make a pretty good attempt at repeating any words we say. Her greatest talent is her ability to pick out every subject of a photograph by name. In fact, her favorite thing right now (besides watching Elmo) is to have us carry her throughout the house so we can ask her to point out her friend Reese, or Teddy, or Tia, Dylan, Cole, G-Daddy, Grandma Deb, Grandma Verna, etc. It really is amazing to me – she hasn’t met a lot of the people that she can recognize by name, but those people give her a lot of joy.Click on the photo to open the gallery – and I recommend using your right arrow key to move through the photos.
